Established and important sporting events, such as the Chania Marathon, the Half Marathon of Arkalochori in Heraklion, the famous Pierra Creta – the southernmost mountaineering race in Europe – the Agios Nikolaos Cliff Diving competition, with daring dives from the eye-catching rock of Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos, and many others, are a testament to Crete’s vast appeal for athletes and fans alike.
Throughout Crete, tournaments for football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, beach volleyball and beach tennis, road cycling, mountain biking, polo and many other sports, are frequently organised by local fan clubs, associations and sports centres, with the involvement of local teams.
However, many national and international championships, such as the Mini Football World Cup (Socca World Cup 2019), the World Youth Weightlifting Championship (2022), the European U20 Basketball Championship (2017), the Deaf Basketball World Championship (2023), the Aegean Islands and Crete Regional Sailing Championship (2023) for the OPTIMIST and ILCA 4 categories and more, have also been organised in Crete.
